Thursday, June 18, marked a historic, long-awaited milestone for the Americana World Community Center (AWCC). Alongside Mayor Craig Greenberg, former Congressman John Yarmuth, Councilwoman Betsy Rhue, and our partners at Family Health Centers (FHC), we officially broke ground on our $4.3 million Capital Campaign Renovation Project!
Operating under the vision of "Americana Future Forward," this comprehensive campus master plan has been carefully developed and championed since 2018. Yesterday's ceremony represents a powerful shift for our organization—moving away from temporary fixes and anchoring ourselves firmly into the landscape and future of South Louisville.
Transforming Infrastructure into Dignity
This sweeping modernization project will completely overhaul our historic, 70-year-old facility’s 9,920-square-foot South Wing across three distinct levels. Beyond just updates to the physical square footage, these renovations are fundamentally about delivering comprehensive, dignified, and accessible care.
Key enhancements coming to the campus include:
Bringing Healthcare Indoors: Ending 17 years of clinical care delivered out of cramped parking lot modular trailers, the Family Health Centers–Americana clinic will move into a permanent, custom-built medical suite.
Doubling Clinical Capacity: Expanding the clinic space from 4 legacy exam rooms to 8 state-of-the-art rooms, fully integrating primary care, behavioral health, and specialized Survivors of Torture Services under one roof.
A New Community Pharmacy: Directly responding to recent pharmacy closures across South Louisville, the renovation will establish an on-site neighborhood pharmacy to address a critical health equity gap.
Space for Community & Culture: Building custom-tailored physical facilities to revitalize AWCC’s signature community programs, including our youth after-school initiatives, local Ethnic Community Groups, and the Fiberworks women's studio.
The Power of Partnership
Reaching this $4.3 million fundraising milestone was a true cross-sector triumph, built on a resilient coalition of federal grants, local city leadership investments, and generous foundation awards.
We want to extend our deepest gratitude to our key funding partners who closed the gap on this vision:
The Federal Community Funding Appropriations ($2,000,000)
The City of Louisville & Office of the Mayor ($800,000 critical mid-year allocation)
Our regional philanthropic community, including a cornerstone grant from the James Graham Brown Foundation.
Bridging the Gap from Surviving to Thriving
Every year, Americana supports more than 5,000 refugees, immigrants, and underserved neighborhood residents tracing their heritages back to over 100 countries of origin. While this building is made of bricks and mortar, our campus is built on the relentless dedication of our staff, volunteers, and the vibrant South Louisville community.
Active construction officially launches this summer. As we turn the dirt and begin building, we are one step closer to ensuring that Americana remains a modern beacon of equity and holistic care for decades to come.
